A significant sum of $72.5 million was raised during a fundraising event held at the Muslim Youth Organisation ground in Georgetown, Guyana, on Saturday night. The event, known as the National Ramadan Village, aimed to gather support for Palestine amidst ongoing humanitarian crises in the region. The funds collected were handed over to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the primary humanitarian agency operating in Gaza.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali addressed the gathered crowd, emphasizing the compassion and solidarity of the Guyanese people towards those suffering in Gaza. He underscored the importance of global peace and unity, urging the Muslim community to join hands in prayer for peace in both Guyana and Palestine. President Ali highlighted that the substantial donations were a testament to the spirit of unity across communities in Guyana, reflecting a collective effort to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians.

It’s noted that the $72.5 million donation excludes contributions made directly to the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana’s (CIOG) bank account. The fundraising initiative aims to support humanitarian efforts to provide aid to Gaza, which has been under an Israeli siege for the past six months.

Gaza’s Health Ministry provided an update indicating the dire situation, with 33,175 Palestinians killed and 75,886 wounded since Israel initiated its military campaign in October. President Ali reiterated his calls for an end to the violence in Gaza, condemning what he described as a “genocide” unfolding in the region. He emphasized the urgency of halting the violence and called for international attention and action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
