If black people want to know why white people appear to shun them sometimes, or they get extra glances by the police, or business owners second guess them as a good fit, it’s NOT because racism. It’s because statistics.
In some cities, everybody locks their doors at night. In some small towns, nobody locks anything.
In some cities, if you leave your car unlocked, your cd player will be gone by lunch.
In some cities, you read on the news over and over and over again another black criminal, another shooting, another theft, another gang, more violence, more violence. And it’s 90% going to be a black person.
What I’m trying to say is, mothers cross the street when they see you, not because they are racist, but because statistics don’t lie. They don’t know you personally but they do know what they see on the news continuously and the faces printed on the morning papers.
It really doesn’t help if you dress like a gangster or a thug, walking around with pants to the ground and hoodie on and all that. To a little white momma, that is the look of an extremely dangerous gang member out to shiv someone over pocket change.
People “appear” to be racists when all they are is cautious.
Nobody can deny the stats about white vs black crime rates, or violence and gangs, especially in certain cities. There is such a thing as thug culture and the general society has a hard time accepting it as normal and safe.
The only way to combat a perceived “racist” is to find a way to meet them for all of 3 minutes and be friendly.
The best way to combat racism is that you do the best you can do to be a decent person, that’s it.
One thing that is guaranteed to never work, is constantly declare everybody else is a racist and you’re a victim of oppression. People throughout history who are oppressed, don’t need to declare themselves so, everybody already knows they were. People who have to fight tirelessly to get society to label them as oppressed, are probably not so at all.
Nobody respects a person who won’t stand for themselves and take responsibility for themselves. Nobody respects self-victimization. Nobody respects someone who blames all their problems on others. Especially blaming all their problems on random other people in this country whom they’ve never even interacted with.
Calling out “racism” or “racists” should be the same as calling out “rapists”. In other words, you have to call them out one by one by their individual actions. You can’t just label everything racist. Only individuals can be racists and only individuals can be rapists.
One gets tired of the generalities, these sweeping useless ethereal bumper sticker slogans. “Institutional racism!”. Really? Where? Who? Name one? Racist cops! Where? Who? Name one? Name an individual racist and their actions will be summarily denounced by any decent human regardless of political party or religion. But you can’t fight against general bumper sticker slogans. What is there to fight except to be in general angry all the time at everybody over something you’re just sure they must have done or believe. Because they just must have!
Give up thug culture, be a decent human. Try smiling instead of glaring. Try meeting people instead of believing everybody is racist against you.
Unfortunately, you have to fight against statistics which are against you, especially in some cities. Moving away is an option. There are a thousand decent mixed race cities out there where everybody goes about their business just fine together.
