Design has a profound impact on our daily lives. Yet we rarely think about it… What’s good design for you? What set of principles would you agree with? We will answers these questions.

For this exercise Ironhack want me to think about the 3 best and worst user experiences I have ever had with a service or product, both physical and digital, and rank them and what did it make them so awesome (or terrible)?

I used the revised version of “10 principles for good design” made by
Chirryl-Lee Ryan.

Worst design

B.TV APP

1- The Bouygues Telecom B.tv application lets you watch your TV programs from your smartphone or tablet, at home or on the move. Launched more than 5 years ago, a problem occurred often (now fixed), watch on any channel, a series or a movie in original version and/or with subtitles. This feature was only available on the TV but not on the mobile application. With Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and all the new competitors, how a telecom operator decided not to implement these features in 2019.

MACBOOK PRO 2018 or more

2- Apple has revolutionized the world with their technology, from the Iphone to the Apple Watch. Today Apple has become the most expensive company in the world, listed at $1 billion on the stock exchange in August 2018. That’s 3 times France’s budget for this year, and half of France’s GDP last year. Yes, bravo Apple! Having recently acquired a Macbook Pro, I’m all for revolutionizing things, but sometimes you have to listen to the needs of the customers.

This above is the port usb c used on latest version, a major disadvantage is the need to connect with other machines, accessories and network devices. Often, one simply needs to exchange data locally or connect to “non-Apple” hardware.

3- Doctolib is a consultation management application for healthcare professionals and an online appointment scheduling service for patients. Convenient to make an appointment with any doctor according to its urgency and we can add it to our agenda. A disadvantage noticed recently on my phone when we want to start again with a medical practitioner we haven’t consulted for more than 6 months, we have to scroll the screen several times. The application could simply make a summary calendar of the number of appointments per doctor according to the months, a time saving for everyone.

Best design

1- Digital Ticket! It’s the festive season when we have to offer gifts to people and during my purchases I appreciated — with certain loyalty cards — that the salesman offers me to send the invoice directly by e-mail. For me, this experience allows less waste, no loss of tickets and a quick consultation.

2- Spotify Wrapped, a review of what happened on his platform. In this Spotify Wrapped 2019, you’ll discover your listening habits, a story about your listening time, your top tracks… This year Spotify has put together a story to end the decade with the top 5 most-listened to artists, genres, tracks… right down to a summary of the number of minutes over the last 5 years. It’s great to be able to review your year or decade and make an observation.

3-Dyson, like Apple, changed the world of technology with its bagless vacuum and Dyson didn’t want to stop there, the brand attacked most air-using equipment.

Dyson Airblade launched in 2006

In 2006, Dyson launched its hand-dryer, “Dyson Airblade”, the machine can dry hands in 10 seconds and to use less electricity than conventional hand dryers. The Dyson Airblade is 69% more energy-efficient than conventional hand-dryers and 97% more cost effective than paper towels.

Airblade Wash+Dry

With this new 2-in-1 hand dryer model, the company has solved major problems:
No more moving around to dry those hands
No more water on the floor to reach the hand dryer or paper dryer

Now if I have to write my own 10 principles for 2020 about a good/better design, here they are:

  1. Solve problem
  2. Meet people needs
  3. Lovable
  4. Simple
  5. Sustainable
  6. Eco-friendly
  7. Recyclable
  8. Takes risk
  9. Multifaceted
  10. Improvable

Thanks for reading comments and give claps!
