John, this is a great piece and though painful to read I agree it’s important to understand the thoughts — but mostly feelings — of Trump supporters. I’ve been angry and exasperated with them, but that has faded to, well, pity as I realized how poorly served they are by the candidate they’ve chosen. They have real problems that need real solutions, and those solutions don’t have to be mutually exclusive with the needs and desires of those on the “other side.”
The saddest part, though, is that they blame Obama or Hillary or “liberals” for these problems, yet the real power to enact the policies that would benefit them lies with Congress. The very Congress they’ve been filling with their own alleged representatives for decades.
Part of the overall solution needs to be civics education, and a renewal of the media’s responsibility to educate and not just entertain the electorate. The Presidency is not as important as we make it out to be, and nothing will ever change if we don’t fix Congress.
