Clean your fridge without harsh chemicals
Every now and then it is a good idea to take everything out of the fridge and give it a thorough clean. The worst part of this job is pulling everything out and putting it back in again, but luckily the actual cleaning is simple!
- 1/2 cup sodium bicarbonate
- Hot water
- 1 x Lemon juiced
- Lemon essential oil
Once all the shelves have been cleared and you have thrown away any lurking out-of-date food, (we all have some, just throw that away!) bring the hot water over to the fridge and use the bucket to hold open the door.
Sprinkle sodium bicarbonate on each shelf and squeeze on some lemon juice. The mixture will fizz and bubble. As soon as the reaction starts wipe each shelf with a clean cloth that has been submerged in the hot water.
If super dirty and something horrible has spilt then you might need to remove the shelf and put it in the sink to work on, but if done every month or so this should be unnecessary. It is recommend that you start this process form the top shelf and work down. This will save messing up work already done.
The chiller/crisper draws at the bottom can be a bit tricky. You will find it easier to take them out and just put a kettle full of hot water into the bottom and slosh this about a bit. Empty into the sink and repeat the above instructions.
Once you have the fridge clear of all the mess and spills, just spray or pour a little vinegar onto each shelf and drawer and dry off with a new clean cloth. To finish, sprinkle a few drops of lemon essential oil.
Handy tip: it helps to put freshly laundered tea towels folded at the bottom of the chiller/crisper drawers, but remember these need to be changed each time you clean the fridge.
