But Apple did provide law enforcement with a Golden Key

Since iOS8 started encrypting peoples data by default there have been a few concerned voices saying that this will help keep criminals out of jail.

Some have suggested that Apple should provide law enforcement with a “Golden Key” a secret password that would unlock ALL iPhones.

That is obviously a bad idea for many reasons (if you doubt me just Google it and you’ll come to your senses)

Apple being Apple solved this in a much better way.

Most people can’t even be bothered to use a PIN code on their phone. Enter Touch ID with a fingerprint scanner. Now you’ve got a simple way to secure your phone. No need to memorize or enter a 4 digit code. It can’t be bruteforced or guessed.

Great? Yeah, great.

But… if you’re a criminal the law enforcement have a right to use force to take that finger print from you. And once they have it they can create a fake thumb with your print on it.

Hey presto! The perfect Golden Key. It unlocks only the phones of the person in custody and won’t compromise the safety of the rest of us.
