Hydroponics is the process of growing plants without the use soil, instead rockwool, hydroball, coco fiber are used in place of soil.

With hydroponics the plants nutrients are sourced straight from the water which is made up from a chemical solution, the plants are like kittens with a bowl of milk, they just lap it up. These nutrients are made up of vital chemicals that are required for a plant to grow healthy and strong. Because the water is contained, there is no water wastage which means hydroponics can save up to 40% on water usage. That’s a large saving especially if you are growing commercially. A major selling point is that there is no chance of soil contamination which is fucking amazing for the environment. I doubt even those “organic farms” can even say that.

Hydroponics and Marijuana

I’m sure many of you have heard the terminology hydroponics, most of the time one associates it with Marijuana and with good reason, artists such as Snoop Dogg, and Wiz Khalifa mention it in there songs all the time. This makes one think, why would Marijuana growers use hydroponics? Well… because it’s a highly efficient way of growing, fast and very compact, they want to grow vast quantities and as fast as possible while retaining quality. We can definitely take a leaf out of their book.

In deep thought, very deep

Hydroponics and has steadily made its way into the commercial agriculture industry over the last few years because of it’s many advantages. In New York and other large cities there is a growing trend called window farming, people are building these vertical hydroponic systems that make use of the window as a light source. Also if you stay in a flat then it’s perfect, and because the roots of the plant don’t have to search for nutrients they end up with smaller roots, which means you can grow in a confined space like a small balcony.

How Hydroponics changed my life

A few years ago My Fiance and I adopted a street cat, he was only 4 months old and we named him Butternut, he was the perfect cat. However after some time we noticed he had some issues, the street life had treated him hard and gave him personality traits that would be with him for life. He had a really short attention span, and even battled to sit through an episode of Big Cat Diaries, he also picked up a catnip addiction. We had to act fast, I had some knowledge of plants but I didn’t have the space to grow them. Hydroponics was the solution, I built a really primitive system and it worked, took to it like a duck to water. We were able to grow a steady supply of catnip from a small balcony. Butternut loved it and he became a totally different cat from then on. I mean sure, we were promoting his addiction but we had a cat that was loving, sociable and appreciated my jokes. This is how hydroponics changed my life for the better, I’m sure there are similar stories out there
