Medium Wishlist
Dear Medium,
Your service is great. I use it everyday. Here’s some things I would love or noticed could be tuned.
- [Jun 26] Consistent read suggestions across Web|Email|Push|Mobile. Since I downloaded the iPhone app a long while back, I’ve always wished there was some consistency between Push Notifications, My Email Digest and the feed on the homepage and when signed in and IOS app. For some reason (I believe iOS in the way), often I click a Push notification and don’t land on that page or get taken to a browser (not signed in) but can’t find the post that I wanted.
- [Jun 26] Easier (iOS) private messaging. I’m not even sure if you can do it? Maybe it isn’t possible because someone I wanted to message is not following me... I’m not even sure, and have not been clear if I have publicly of privately responded a few times…
3. [Jun 26] Clarify response vs response/story? Does it have something to do with size of the response, or the fact that I highlighted something vs just hit the comment button. I still haven’t followed this whole stories/responses thing. I also see inconsistencies with my iOS profile vs desktop as to where stories (responses?) appear.
- [Jun 26] Settings to manage volume of suggestions to read. True story: I loved medium 1 year and a half ago, and the emails overwhelmed me after a couple of weeks of trying to keep up. I set a gmail filter to put them into a folder, stopped seeing them, and didn’t visit medium for about a year. I’m making a big effort to keep up again now, but this is my personal inbox — which I think could be fixed by letting me say “send me 3 emails a week” or
“include up to 3 (best) suggestions per day”:

5. [Jun 26] Recently you asked me to customize my experience through interests and follows/unfollows. So I filled them out. I was getting really tired of getting self help garbage, so I also unsubscribed from “Live Learning”. My Digest is totally full of “The Mission” — a.k.a “Life Learning” and “27 ways to pretend you know what you are talking about”. I can see efforts being made your end, but feel like my efforts to customize were futile so far.

6. [Jun 26] Explain “Unfollow”/follow and it’s impact. I got tired of this guy, so I unfollowed. He is still in my feed right now though. I wonder if I could rate how much I like someoke I follow from 1–10 then you could surface https://medium.com/@jessicasemaan instead who wrote something 13 hours that I would prefer to see. I think I’m going to build a feature for new airpair.com blog, where users can actually write from their settings page a JavaScript algorithm that will feed them what they want. Be cool if I could do that with my medium content too.

7. [Jun 26] Easy linking to previous posts while editing, especially from iOS. It’s REALLY fiddly to link to a previous post, which is common for many writers to do almost every post.
8. [Jun 26] I just had a medium heart attack (get it :p), writing this post clicking the back button by accident. Glad I only lost 3 minutes, but many sites will give an alert confirm popup.

8. [Jun 26] tick tick tick code block mode. I guess I’m used to another editor(ing) experience so when I use both I sometimes wish I could go back and forth. If there’s one thing I would love to do, it’s type “```javascript” followed by some code and close it, just like github README / normal markdown and it renders beautiful format code.
```javascript
function renderPrettified() { alert(‘Thank you medium’) }
```
P.S. I have loads more going through my head— most likely due to building a similar-ish service which makes me think about your product a lot as I use it. So I dated these ones to start keeping track.
P.P.S (Update) I just opened the app and this came top of the feed:
