In the interim since our last reunion, we at HackSC have been up to a few things. You may have noticed some promotion we’ve pushed recently; to keep things short and sweet, applications for HackSC 2020 are live! You have until November 29 at 11:59pm to submit your application at https://odyssey.hacksc.com. We won’t tell you not to do it in the last minute — if it’s in on time, it’s in on time. You do you.
What we will tell you is what you’re getting into. In the greatest two-part series since Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch, we’d like to introduce HackSC’s Verticals: What They Are and What They Mean!
The title’s a little on-the-nose, but for this saga, clarity is key. Our four verticals for the upcoming hackathon are Civil Rights, Sustainability, Equity, and Mental health. In our first installation, we’ll take a closer look at Civil Rights and Sustainability.
Civil Rights
“Help provide technological solutions to issues such as online harassment, workplace misconduct, and bullying, in ways which are innovative, accessible, and straightforward.”
We at HackSC support the civil rights and liberties of all people of all backgrounds. With an ever-increasing global reliance on technology, those rights to be safe, comfortable, and welcomed have digitized. For people around the world, a digital identity has become inseparable from their physical one, and breakthroughs in tech can both help or hinder the safety and stability of every global citizen.
Help support those who need it, whose civil rights could use your assistance.
Sustainability
“Find creative ways to help curb pollution of all varieties, enable access to better environmental scientific literature, or any other cause you see fit to help the planet we all share.”
Sustainability is largely straightforward. Planting 20 million trees, is great, but there’s much more to be done.
From any number of endeavors such as incentivizing sustainable transportation, finding ways to facilitate area cleanups, or using entertainment as a tool for environmental education, your product can have a lasting, physical effect on the world around us.
