Upcoming Hackathons

The crazed bustle of the holidays is finally over and you’ve already broken the majority of your New Year’s resolutions, so it’s time to mark your calendar for some upcoming hackathons. Here’s what is going on in our area over the next few months.

#HackFrost

This virtual hackathon has some familiar faces in the judging panel. I love the idea of coming up with tech solutions for Upstate NY’s love/hate relationship with winter. There is a civic bend to be eligible for prizes, but with a three and a half weeks to build and no limit on team size, surely you can figure out a way for others to benefit from a project that would make your winter life one step easier.

This hackathon runs from January 22 to February 16 and you can find more info here.

WiCHacks 2016

This hackathon is open to women of all skill levels. One of the really unique things is their Newbie track; it introduces basic programming skills over the course of the weekend, which seems to lower that barrier of entry for people who are curious about what goes on in a hackathon but not skilled enough to add value to a team project.

RIT hosts the event, so there is a bit of travel involved to get there. Members of the Code Like a Girl team plan to attend and participate, so hopefully we’ll see you there. The event takes place the weekend of February 27–28. You can find more info here.

Hack Upstate VII

The Hack Upstate we know and love will host it’s seventh event the weekend of April 9 and 10. Sponsors and judges are still being lined up, so if you have suggestions as to what you would like to see as prizes or faces you would like to see staring back at you as you present, now is the time to make them.

For those that don’t know, Hack Upstate is a two-day hackathon open to developers, innovators and designers of all skill levels. Projects are judged on execution, creativity, whether or not it is multidisciplinary, the project’s wow factor, and the demo. You can find out more about the projects that won the fall event here.

Did I miss any hackathons in the first quarter of 2016 that you think I should mention? Let me know about them in the comments and I’ll add them.

From a quick cheer to a standing ovation, clap to show how much you enjoyed this story.
