This one’s for Humanity.
I have always liked the color red,
how it manages to make its way so effortlessly into your veins
or where I come from,
out of it.
I have always liked the color grey
but the bombs fell fast and hard
with the smoke filling up my once hopeful lungs
before it even catches my eyes.
I look around me and I see all my favorite colors,
but that's all I see.
I open my mouth and I try to appologize
I'm sorry that my favorite colors aren't pretty enough for the big screens
I'm sorry that the voices screaming in my head while the bombs fall from the sky are louder than the voices of the world
I'm sorry that somehow my skin is always too white for the world to see
but still
never privileged enough
I look around me and I see
that this is no longer my home
this is no longer a home at all.
And I know that I can never manage to count all the shiny lights that make up the Eiffel
but the skies will always be Aleppo’s
and I’ll never fail to count the stars.
