It is no secret that Athens, Ohio is the home of many historical and well-known places. Between the Ridges and Strouds Run, there are many tourist attractions, but there are also many areas that are less known. These under-the-radar locations are less popular, but nonetheless are just as interesting to explore.

A historical yet intriguing place to visit in Athens County would be Hocking Hills’ Robbins Crossing. Many people are not familiar with this location, but the historical village aimed to honor history has much significance.

The small village consists of seven cabins that were originally built in the 1800’s, each providing an interactive experience for visitors to taste what life was like during this time.

Site Manager Cole Potts describes Robbins Crossing as a place to represent life in the 1800s.

“We’ll dress the part, demonstrate skills as they did in the past, but we’ll relate to modern concepts to try to form a better connection and understanding,” says Potts. “Further, aside from a few locations such as steep staircases, the cabins are fully explorable.”

The interactive cabins hold much historical meaning and relevance within them.

“Each has seen generations of families grow and move on and, as such, each cabin has its own story to tell,” says Potts. “With that in mind, every cabin has a plaque, and is named after the original family that built and lived in them.”

However, the history is not the only aspect of Robbins Crossing. There are activities catered to all kinds of visitors.

“During our usual weekend opening hours we like to talk about the trades we’re doing with the public, why we’re doing it and how they did it then,” says Potts. “This can include things like watching someone practice blacksmithing, or even having the public join in on playing a historic game or two like the game of graces.”

The aspects of this site indefinitely set it apart from similar activities, and there is nothing like it.

Sells Park, located off East State St., is a close and convenient way to enjoy nature, and for those that live near East State this is the perfect walking distance.

Although the park is noticeably smaller than others, it’s perfect for a hike with the family or for enjoying the sight of Sells Pond.

A guided walkway up the hill provides interactive signs by the Athens Library for younger visitors, as well as sidewalk art, making the park seem family-oriented. Many different trails, some leading to a lookout and a rockhouse. They offer lots of unique sights.

This area originally belonged to the Sells Family, but as of 1939 it is now a public park, enjoyed by many locals.

This park also connects with Strouds Run, so if you’re adventurous and are looking for an entire day filled with biking or hiking, this is the place for you!

Fox Lake, located in Waterloo Township, Athens County is a short seven-mile drive from Athens City. The scenic lake and nature area provides a grassy escape from busy life. This lake offers hunting and fishing as well as hiking, as the area is full of trees and trails. They might enjoy the recreational aspect up to its visitors.

Nonetheless, there is much natural beauty that makes up for the lack of activity. Visitors can boat on the lake as well as take in the pretty view. The wildlife area has a few different access points, with one leading to the pier, and another leading to the lake through a grassy trail.

If you’re looking for an adventure, head to Fox Lake! Unlike other lakes and parks in Athens County, such as Strouds Run or Lake Snowden, this lake is a peaceful and unique place to be at one with nature.
