Addendum to basic tip number 1:
“If you’re concerned about your files, back them up ON AN EXTERNAL DRIVE. Windows and MacOS both have built-in backup tools.”

If the backup is on, say, another hard drive or partition on your computer, it will be encrypted as well.

I don’t know what happens if you have mounted your backup path as a netdrive in windows or as a permanently connected external HDD (so that it’s easily accessible via explorer), but I would recommend against finding out the hard way.
