VR Will Break Museums

This article provides some good insights, but it omits discussion of a primary impediment to improved public access to museum treasures: the cultural inertia of a walled garden mentality in the museum community. Although the internet technically permits unified access to all available information on a specific museum object, the typical museum approach is to provide digital access ONLY to the museums own information base. Until the world’s museums agree to accept a universal artifact identification scheme that permits assembly of comprehensive information on each exhibited item, the full potential of digital information access to museum exhibits will not be realized. VR is an exciting new tool for cultural exploration, but until museums agree to share their knowledge in a cooperative universal framework, the pace of progress will be sluggish, and the full sharing of mankind’s cultural heritage will remain a distant prospect.
