How hard is it to listen?
Most people think that public speaking is one of the best skills a person can have.
It’s a great skill to have, but there’s an even better skill that is rarely found today.
The skill of being a good listener.
When you’re talking, it’s an action that is done for you. You talk, and others pay attention to you. You talk, and others care about you. You talk, and others focus on you. You can talk to yourself all day long. Talking and speaking is a self-beneficial action.
Listening always involves and is always about other people.
When you listen to your friends, you learn more about them. You learn what they’re facing, you learn how to help them, you learn how to be a better friend.
When you listen to your superiors, you find ways to improve. You learn the problems in your performance, you devise methods of fixng those problems, you learn how to be a better worker.
When you listen to other people, you learn something. You find stories you can relate to, you take lessons from their wisdom, you learn how to be a better person.
People get so hung up on speaking, that they forget the other key aspect of any human relation: listening.
So start listening.
