Reading the Landscape — #ARTGR520
My journey of discovery into south campus in Ames by Hailey McDermott
For this assignment I walked 20 minutes south from the College of Design across Campustown almost to Mortensen Road by the softball field. Walking without a purpose was an interesting experience. All of my walks on/across campus have been made with the purpose of getting some place in a timely manner. Interestingly, the walk seemed shorter when I was more focused on the journey and less focused on getting to a destination. In an unexpected twist, my destination ended up being the first place I visited in Ames. Without coming to Ames to play softball many years ago, I likely wouldn’t be here attending school at Iowa State today.
The below drawing is a reflection of my recollections from the walk. I divided the areas I traveled into depths starting from the most familiar to the least as I walked “deeper” into south Ames. The icon sketches show different landmarks or things I remembered from the walk.
