By this time today, I thought I would have written 2,000 good words. The piece I’ve been working on, I thought this morning, would have evolved into a finished first draft. I would be drinking beer.

The universe had other plans. I dreamt that magnetic waves shook the earth. Diego, the rabbit that lives in my apartment, fell off his perch twice. I sat down to write only to find that, after my computer ran out of power last night, the Microsoft Word 2011 14.4.4 had failed to recover all unsaved documents modified between the hours of 11:03 and 18:09. All my work was lost. I was devastated.

In a fever, I digitally rifled through my trash bin. I learned that I had never configured my Backup Genie. I opened all files recovered from the past 48 hours, many of which had to be unzipped or variously decoded — my computer manages waste efficiently.

Even when my computer loses important shit, it still manages to cheer me up. It saw I was distressed and wrote me a poem using text from William Shakespeare’s Richard II and Walter Benjamin’s Illuminations. Here it is in its entirety:

Familiar though his name may be to us, the storyteller in his living immediacy is by no means a present force. He has already become something remote from us and something that is getting even more distant. To present someone like Leskov as a storyteller does not mean bringing him closer to us but, rather, increasing our distance from him. Viewed from a certain distance, the great, simple outlines which define the storyteller stand out in him, or rather, they become visible in him, just as in a rock a human head or an animaPs body may appear to an observer at the proper distance and angle of vision. This distance and this angle of vision are prescribed for us by an experience which we may have almost every day. It teaches us that the’art of storytelling is coming to an end. Less and less frequently do we encounter people with the ability to tell a tale properly. More and more often there is embarrassment all around when the wish to hear a story is expressed. story. It has been observable for a number of centuries how in the general consciousness the thought of death has declined in omnipresence and vividness. In its last stages this process is accelerated. And in the course of the nineteenth century bourgeois society has, by means of hygienic and social, private and public institutions, realized a secondary effect which may have been its subconscious main purpose: to make it possible for people to avoid the sight of the dying. Dying was once a public process in the life of the individual and a most exemplary one; think of the medieval pictures in which the deathbed has turned into a throne toward which the people press through the wide-open doors of the death house. Whilst that my wretchedness doth bait myself,

tell. He has borrowed his authority from death. In other words,

it is natural history to which his stories refer back. The historian is bound to explain in one way or another the happenings with which he deals; under no circumstances can he content himself with displaying them as models of the course of the world. But this is precisely what the chronicler does, especially in his classical representatives, the chroniclers of the Middle Ages, the precursors of the historians of today. By basing their historical tales on a divine plan of salvation-an inscrutable one-they have from the very start lifted the burden of demonstrable explanation from their own shoulders. Its place is taken by interpretation, which is not concerned with an accurate concatenation of definite events, but with the way these are embedded in the great inscrutable course of the worldThe historian is bound to explain
