“What connections do you see between: Separation, Story, Economism and Genuine Happiness?” -Reflection question asked by my BiSci teacher, Christopher Uhl

Within our story, we long for genuine happiness. However, economism has separated us from what we think is happiness. We believe (as a majority) that happiness=power, money & success. With a grandiose amount of money, we can achieve anything…or purchase anything. Rather, we can achieve anything without surplus cash. Success is what we make of it. But the economy has distracted all of us from what is actually going on here. We look up to the billionaires and celebrities and successful lawyers/doctors. How do we know they are genuinely happy? We really only know which tangible items they have purchased (and therefore, are showing off). Maybe—just maybe—the money and materialism makes them happy. We only know 100% what makes us genuinely happy people.

Trapped by a money tunnel

I see how separated society is from happiness, or how many times each and everyone of us miss the opportunities to find it. Everyone is distracted, and slightly brainwashed by the idea of “winning” or becoming the most successful, rich, powerful, etc. But who makes the call who the most (insert adjective here) is? What’s interesting about being genuinely happy—yes, interesting as if it’s rare…because it is!— is that outsiders do not decide it for you. It is completely and utterly independent. People are becoming dependent on the economy to make their story for them. Personally, I am at a university receiving (I’m not sure if you receive something if you pay tuition for it, so I’ll say earning instead)an education hoping to make a living someday. Very rarely does someone’s job make them happy. Society needs to become apart of people’s individual stories instead of letting the economy become another chapter of one’s lifelong book.
