Littlefinger & Arya: A Song of Spies and Assassins — Game of Thrones Theory

Fellow fans and first time readers listen up. I’ve got a theory for you and it’s about the most hated man alive in Westeros, that’s right Lord Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish.
*** Spoilers are sure to follow*****
(Listen if I “spoil” anything in this post, rethink the meaning of the word “fan”)
Needless to say we are pretty far away from the books at this point and time is running out and plot lines need to start wrapping up. One of the major plot lines of the entire series is Littlefinger’s quest to sit upon the iron throne. Along the way we have learned that “Littlefinger is one of the most dangerous men in Westeros”, to quote Varys. This man has literally manipulated a number of events to ensure the “War of 5 Kings.” It is no secret Littlefinger’s actions have caused many to die, including some of our favorite Starks. While I wish to see Littlefinger dead, a part of me admires his talent and ambition. One of the best Littlefinger rants in the entire series is in Season 7 Episode 3 “The Queen’s Justice” Littlefinger is speaking with Sansa, whom he tells to not forget how dangerous a woman Cersei has become. Sansa mocks Littlefinger for his “wise” advice. Littlefinger sensing his usefulness to Sansa quickly becoming non-existent, he pulls out a gem.
“Don’t fight in the North or the South. Fight every battle everywhere, always, in your mind. Everyone is your enemy, everyone is your friend. Every possible series of events is happening all at once. Live that way and nothing will surprise you. Everything that happens will be something that you’ve seen before.”- Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish
Amazing speech that gave me goose bumps and from what I could tell Sansa was impressed as well.
The very next episode, “The Spoils of War,” guess who finally returns home? Arya Stark! She returns and the reunion between the two sisters was fulfilling to behold but it did not take long for that old sibling rivalry to resurface. The only difference now is that Lady Stark (Sansa) has armies at her disposal and Arya has, well, she is a super assassin that can become anyone at any time. Sansa was privileged enough to witness Arya’s new talents first hand in a sparring match with Brienne of Tarth who is probably the best swords woman or man in Westeros. Sansa and Littlefinger watch Brienee and Arya spar from the balcony above, Sansa leaves the area with a look of pure disgust while Littlefinger and Arya lock eyes. Remember, it’s in this same episode that Littlefinger presents Bran with the Catspaw dagger and Bran simply reminds Littlefinger of a conversation he had with Varys, “chaos is a ladder.” This is where my theory begins.
When Arya returned to Winterfell she was discovered by Sansa. Sansa took Arya to see Bran who returned from years beyond the wall. During the sibling gathering Bran gives the Catspaw dagger to Arya. Arya and Bran do not have any on screen dialog after Bran gives Arya the dagger. If I’m Arya I want to talk to my brother that has lived beyond the wall as a cripple and survived. Bran, being The 3 eyed raven, has knowledge of everything that has ever happened.
Fast forward to Episode 5 “Eastwatch” Littlefinger notices Arya spying on his so he leads her to a scroll that read out of context would mean that Sansa is an enemy to the Starks and the North forth that matter. It is at this point I believe Arya went to question Littlefinger after she found the scroll. I believe she played “the game of faces” with him and she killed him for betraying her father and her family. I believe she not only killed Littlefinger but took his face as well.
Bare with me.
We have not seen Littlefinger and Arya at the same time since Arya found the letter. And it only makes sense for Arya, who is in fact a master spy, to go to Littlefinger first to see what he knows. The next step is to talk to Sansa to find out what she knows but as Littlefinger.
In Episode 6 “Beyond the Wall,” Arya then approaches Sansa as Littlefinger while Sansa is searching Arya’s quarters for the incriminating scroll. Arya appears out of thin air and explains who the Faceless Men are and that she was trained to be one which is why she has faces in her bag. Arya then decides to play “The game of faces” with Sansa. Arya then discloses what I think is a confirmation that Littlefinger is now dead. Arya states that “the game of faces did not end so well for the last person who asked me questions.” That was confirmation for me. If we haven’t seen Littlefinger on screen with Arya since she found the letter, if we can safely assume Arya more than likely approached Lord Baelish before she approached Sansa, then who did she play the game of faces with? I theorize, before the old gods and the new, that Arya killed Littlefinger and took his face when he lost the game of faces. Hopefully in the season finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf,” we will see if this theory is correct.
