The Importance of Media Representation

The definition of media representation is the way aspects of society, such as gender, age or ethnicity, are presented to audiences.

Media representation is very important and it is an aspect that affects everyone, it is an aspect that starts out when you are young. For example, if a black child is watching a show, and there are no characters that remind that child of himself or herself, that child will begin to believe that it is impossible for black people to be actors or actresses because of the lack of diversity being shown on their television. In the picture above Rihanna’s caption was “why we do this.” There was a lack of diversity in the children’s film industry until recently, and there is a lack of characters that represent black kids, so when Home was released little girls were so excited to finally see someone that reminded them, of them, and that is why representation matters.

Women in the media are often times degraded because of the ways that they carry themselves and their actions. Celebrities like Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé are positive role models for not only African American women, but for women of all ethnic groups. Even though both women are positive role models, there are still the few negative things that people discuss about them. For example, Nicki Minaj, one of the most popular female rappers of this time, she is talked down upon because of the fact that she has gotten plastic surgery, or the way that she dresses, or the fact that her lyrics are so vulgar. Nicki Minaj came into the game when there was a lack of female rappers in the industry, and she knew exactly what the people wanted, and she gave them just that, sassy rhymes and a sexy appearance. Nicki Minaj is one of the most giving artists, as Beyoncé is as well. Beyoncé was talked down on in 2016, when she released her feminist/pro-black album titled, “Lemonade,” it was a topic of discussion because it touched bases with black women, while her audience does not consist of only black women, so it was seen as an issue because all women could not relate to songs like “Formation,” as they could relate to her other hits like “Run the World (Girls).” It is important that artists like Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé to inspire women to express themselves and to embrace who they are because in today’s society it is not normal to see black women uplifting other black women.

As stated above, women are degraded in today’s society, whether it be on television, on the big screen, or in the music industry. Women are constantly sexualized and made to be seen as a sex figure, which is not fair, because men are not seen in that way. It is important that women are represented in a more respectful light, instead of being seen in a sexual connotation.

It is important for society to realize that everyone is different, and that there should be diversity in everything that we do, after all, that is what media representation is about. Media representation is EVERYTHING. It is very important that the media represents everyone! Big, small, short, tall, black, and white are all characteristics that define people in today’s society and it is important that all of those aspects be represented to inspire others in the world.
