I think the issue is that most of us (Jews who have light skin) have consistently been acknowledging that we benefit from white privilege. All we’re saying with wanting a seat at the intersectional table and some solidarity is that we are ALSO are harmed by it. My Jewish culture, Jewish faith, Jewish upbringing, Jewish values…they all point me toward tikkun olam and seeing where I sit in the world.
White privilege that I have (even though I’m not white) allows me an access point to advocate for POC (which I don’t call myself either) in whatever way they tell me they need, or whichever ways I am given a voice where they don’t have one. White privilege also allows me to drive and not get pulled over, pay for my groceries and not be forced to pull out ID to pay, shop without a salesperson tailing me for fear I’m a thief, etc.
Now, though. Now IS the time to be extending a hand for solidarity as members of the groups harmed by White Supremacy, not simply extending one as an ally. We deserve, and many of us desperately need, to be seen as fellows, hand in hand, to fight our shared oppression.
We’ve been, and we continue, working as allies where that’s our role. This is NOT that time to signal boost another call to action for us to perform our already-proven allyship. Now IS the time to explain to gentiles why we need a seat at the table for ourselves.
