What We Save When We Give Up
Megan Reynolds

I gave up alcohol for a few months in Berlin, a city where beer can go for as cheap as 30c a bottle, a glass of wine in a restaurant is around €4,20, a bottle from the supermarket is around €7, and I still saved a noticeable amount of money. It’s so easy to linger over a second, third, etc. glass of wine at dinner, at which point it feels like a good idea to pop in to a bar for a nightcap, etc. Also, much like anything else, my drinking experienced serious lifestyle creep — suddenly the €5 bottle of wine was replaced by the €11 bottle, a €3,50 beer at the bar became a €9 cocktail … it adds up is all. Maybe not $1000 a month, but for me it certainly came to a few hundred.
