Are we to presume that the people “in the countryside,” to use Lord’s words, are privy to some knowledge about politics that the rest of us lack? That their perspective is so virtuous that it should outweigh that of the majority of their fellow citizens?
No, but we can presume that their votes outweigh those of “the rest of us”… which is why it still matters that he retains the support of his base. Nothing’s changed in the electoral process or math since the election, has it? He won, despite being unpopular; and now he’s in power, it’s not any sort of level playing field for the foreseeable future. And nor has the usefulness or otherwise of opinion polls changed — almost none of which predicted his win. Why should we trust them now?
I’ll presume from your Medium tagline that you’re part of the political commentariat, most of whom also just didn’t see President Trump coming (hell, I predicted he’d be president — the first time a year before he was voted in — based solely on the sort of in-the-bubble thinking on the Left you’re displaying here). Why should we trust the commentariat now?
If you still don’t understand that a lot of the people who voted for him knew what they were voting for, well, you’re missing the point: the chaos isn’t a bug, it’s a feature….
