My Primary Text (Media Coursework)
I’ve been trying to decide what I want to have as my primary text for this year’s coursework for a fair bit, now.
I initially wanted to analyse the Netflix series ’13 Reasons Why’ and the show’s focus on Suicide, however, when exploring other options within the show, I saw that nostalgia was a theme that interested me more, and wasn’t so melancholy. Unfortunately, I think that 13 Reasons Why isn’t a series that’s invested in nostalgia enough to merit being my primary text. Instead, I decided to focus on another Netflix original: Stranger Things.
So, why Stranger Things?
Stranger Things is an original show whose entire focus is nostalgia. The show’s whole selling point is that it’s an original story which reminds the audience of the blockbuster films from the 1980’s (E.g., E.T, Goonies, Stand By Me, etc.) which are deeply embedded in our Western culture. Throughout the show there are intertextual references to these sort of films, whether explicit or implicit; the style of direction is one that is reminiscent of Steven Spielberg, who was undoubtedly one of the most popular & successful directors during this period.
This is a show which returns the children that grew up in the 80’s — like my parents — to that age of nerd culture.
In addition to this, Stranger Things is one of Netflix’s first shows to become immensely popular and mainstream that was produced for their original programming.
Furthermore, this is a show that I immensely enjoyed watching: it was constructed carefully and beautifully, and I would have no issue analysing and deconstructing it.
