The Best Way to Grill a Sirloin Steak

It’s those hot summer months, the perfect time for grilling. What better than juicy sirloins to bring the neighborhood to your house or enjoy a simple cookout with your family.

When you’re going to make a great sirloin steak, the best practice is to begin by picking the best selection of meat. Go for organic, free range beef with the farthest expiration date, and choose the “top sirloin” rather than the “bottom sirloin.”

This is a more prized and delicious part of the animal, and the taste will be worth the money. Choose a piece of meat that is marbled with fat, with a light, bright red color. Choose meats that are 1–1 ½ inches thick for the best results in grilling.

Always remove your meat from the refrigerator about 1 hour – 1 ½ an hour before you begin grilling. If you put your meat right on the grill, it will heat to quickly and become tough as you cook it.

Make sure the steak is dry before you begin to grill. The excess water on the steak will steam the steak, eliminating the grilling method of cooking that you’re looking for when cooking your steak.

Use marinades and seasonings. Seasonings should be rubbed into the steak twice; first once and then a second time 10 minutes later after the steak has absorbed the initial spices. Steaks should sit in marinades for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to permeate the meat before grilling.

Cover your grill with a layer of non-stick spray or oil. Get your grill very hot, because your steaks should be cooked on high, dry heat. If you are using a charcoal grill, utilize either lump charcoal or charcoal briquettes.

When you grill a steak, only flip it once, otherwise you won’t get those beautiful char marks that you are looking for. Each side of the steak should take only 2 to 4 minutes to cook.

Let your steaks rest after grilling before you slice them, about 5 to 15 minutes. If you skip this step, the fluids will not be absorbed by the meat, and you will have dry, runny steaks rather than juicy meat.
