Maximizing Learning by Sharing
Things that you learn produce more learning for you if you share it with some friend and have a discussion over it. That is what I did. I learned some new tips to ‘Manage and maximize your career.’ So, I decided to share it with my friend, who did not know about these tip, in order to help him and also to learn something new by knowing his point of view and experience. The tips are as follows:
1. Do an internship before pursuing a higher degree to confirm if you like that field/industry
2. Don’t do PhD if you want to be an entrepreneur or work in corporate sector
3. Spend at least one year in your first job
4. Find your passion and align it with your career
5. Decisions are very unique to each person, what’s right for one isn’t right for the other
6. Own your decisions: Don’t let other people make decisions for you and don’t blame anyone else
I shared these tips one by one with him and had discussion. He agreed with first tip. He said that it is very helpful to learn that whether you like the field or not.
He also agreed with the second tip. He said that it is better to gain experience in your field rather than doing PhD.
For the third tip, he was not convinced that it is necessary to spend a year in a job. He said that if I am not learning and having experience in my field, then I should look for some new job for better experience. Then I raised the point that even if you do not get to learn too much about your field and you are not gaining a lot of experience, you would get to learn about how the organization work, and the work environment. Even if you are having a bad experience, that is also some learning. So, next time, when you will be facing something like that, you will be more prepared.
He agreed with the fourth tip. He shared his own experience with me. He said that his passion was in computer sciences, but his parents forced him to become an engineer. As he was not passionate about engineering, he was not having a good experience in university.
He also agreed with fifth and sixth tip. He said that circumstances are different for everyone. Everyone is responsible for its own destination. As in his case, his parents made the decision of his future. As a result, he was not having a good time at university. Now he has his parents to blame. He said that he should have taken decision on his own and should have decided his future by himself.
It was a very good experience for me, sharing these tips with my friend. I think it is great to share new thing that you learn with other people to maximize your learning. You should also experience sharing new thing that you learn with your friends.
