Over the weekend, I finished watching season 1 of the Apple TV+ series, “Severance”, which gives a twisted portrayal of a seemingly dystopian and highly monitored and secured workplace.

The basic premise is about a small group of office workers who chose to undergo a work-related surgical procedure that implants a micro chip into their brains. The purpose of this is to sever the ties between their personal and office lives. Whenever they are outside of their office floor, they will have memories of their personal relationships and interactions. And whenever they enter their office floor, the micro chip switches their brains over to their office-only memories. In this way, each office worker has two identities. And it is revealed that each character has voluntarily signed up for this severance procedure, which is apparently irreversible.

I found the first season to be interesting and a good set up for the overall storyline. The most intriguing aspect of the show centers around the mystery of what these office workers actually do as “work”, it looks like they are playing a video game on their retro looking computers. Viewers will also be wondering what is the company trying to accomplish with this “severance” technology in the grander scheme of things.
