The Most Useless Degrees Ever

Mark Zuckerberg, Azad Chaiwala and so many people claim a university degree is useless. Well, I agree and do not agree, it depends on the major you are choosing. You do need a degree to become a doctor, lawyer, banker, or psychologist.

Mark Zuckerberg talking about college degree being useless in one of his TEDx talk

My criteria for considering a major useless:

A) Anyone can do it without going to uni, anyone can learn the skill so it doesn’t make sense to waste 4 years and realize at the workplace, that other people who don’t have a degree are still paid the same as you with a bachelor's degree.

B) The industry doesn’t necessarily require you to have a degree in it.

C) No money, no stable career.

Here is the list of the most useless majors ever:
1) Computer Science/Software Engineering: Ooopss got a shock? The most overhyped majors “CS” or “SE” are useless since anyone can learn programming by doing courses online on Udemy/Coursera or even from YouTube or through different institutes like Aptech. Tech companies like Google, and META want your skills, not a 4-year degree. And the big names in tech from which people get inspired to choose CS, themselves don’t have a degree and claim that a CS degree is useless.

2) Graphic Design/Animation: Well, one of my choices during high school… you don’t need a 4-year degree to learn Photoshop, Illustrator, or typography to be a designer. And again, design studios do not necessarily require you to have a degree in it.

3) Film/Production: Some people might know that I was a media science major at first and why did I drop and transfer? I realized it’s useless to study filmmaking for 4-years. Many successful producers and directors never went to film school! You can do courses from institutes like Arena Multimedia.

4) Digital Marketing: Yeah, being a Marketing student myself, learning digital marketing is useless, and for 4 years? Hell No… Pure Marketing is worth studying, many universities like Iqra, KU, and Greenwich are offering BS in Digital Marketing which doesn’t make sense to me, you don’t need a degree to learn SEO, and Facebook Ads lol, SEO is not a rocket science and Facebook Ads is not a political economics. Even as a marketing major, my curriculum has a Digital Marketing course this semester and I can say it is the most useless thing I’m studying in my whole 4 year BBA degree. Anyone can be a digital marketer, you don’t need a degree in marketing for it. Overall Marketing is 100% worth studying but for other complex careers like Marketing Research, Brand Management, or Corporate Communications because the industry requires a marketing degree for these roles and you can’t learn on your own.

CONCLUSION:

Take it with a grain of salt, it’s just my personal opinion that if I can learn a thing without wasting my time and money going to university, then it’s useless to study a major. But, if someone really loves a field for example programming or animation, and doesn’t like anything else, then why not? Go for a computer science or animation degree.
