I’m not sure this is a reasonable claim. Can’t we argue that there were options for spending on personal pleasure in 600 CE IF that is what was socially acceptable? Replace tobacco with alcohol (beer+wine). Replace sugar with honey. Throw in sumptuary spending. And so on.
