In light of Muhammad Ali’s passing yesterday (June 3, 2016) at the age of 74, Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), published an online set of photos taken during the three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer’s 1993 trip to Iran. According to IRNA, the photo set is dated May 6, 1993.

The Champ’s trip was a humanitarian one, as he visited both Iran and Iraq in order to help in efforts in releasing POWs that were taken during their eight-year long war in the 1980s. In this specific set, Ali is seen visiting religious sites and meeting with various Iranian government officials.

Prior to this IRNA set of photos, a number of other pics of Ali’s trip could be found online as well.

It should be noted that Ali’s 1993 trip wasn’t the first time the Champ visited Iran. He also visited the country in the late 1970s during the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran.

These are the last two pics of the IRNA set of photos — taken as the Champ leaves a meeting and gets into a vehicle.

Rest in Power, Ali.
