Many years ago I read an article narrated in the first person by Ty Cobb claiming that when Cobb was a manager his team struck out Babe Ruth on a fake intentional walk.
The story was involved, but basically Cobb called for the pitcher to walk Ruth. When the pitcher threw a strike instead, Cobb came out of the dugout and berated the pitcher. After the pitcher repeated this for strike two, Cobb came out and angrily replaced the pitcher. The new pitcher promptly threw strike three! Cobb claimed that this had been the plan all along.
Problem is, I can’t locate this story anywhere. I reread Cobb’s autobiography, My Life in Baseball, but didn’t find it there. The only other possibility I can think of is that Cobb wrote about the incident before his death and it was published in some periodical. Do you have any idea if this story is true and where it might have been published?
