I think that the apparent experience of a singular/coherent Self narrative is simply an evolved cognitive device to minimise cognitive load and dissonance. It seems to me to be a much simpler idea to assume that we have multiple selves, in multiple contexts, all of which are emergent and which co-evolve.

So perhaps it’s not a matter of the need for multiple emergent selves, but a matter of ‘being’ in multiple contexts which leads to multiple emergent selves.
