this is a transparent and interesting modulation of an interview, of your own child!
this is a mysterious piece; the title and images seem at odds at first, but as you pull your audience through the narrative, we discern what/why/how/where/etc. all the facts we need to know and WHY we need to know.
at first, i didn’t understand the title, but as i read it and learned, it became clear. the narrative allowed me-as-audience some breathing room to understand the piece. you lead me through your thought process, and eventually come to an idea.
the fact that this was an interview is very vague BUT as a journalist i get it. you don’t want to interview your son about his life for your class! who would? but you take the most interesting angle on it, AND i learn so much about one son, and you as a mother, and the idea that he has a twin that you barely mention is such an interesting author-device.
you use links, screenshots, and photos appropriately, and they make a great impact. you couldn’t have better placed the finger pointing up when your son said they probably have a privacy policy.
even more than the interview, we learn so much about you as a mother, and a person. your ethics when it comes to giving your children what they want, BUT the casual comedic tone is such a lovely addition to this funky narrative. you eschew the paranoid mother trope with deference, and make me second-guess the online genetic testing thing as well.
this piece is clever, and unabashedly earnest.
