RE: Wimmen in Comics Wednesday: Corinne Halbert

thoroughness & comprehension (plus) • creativity (plus) • use of platform (plus plus)

this is a quick little read about a local artist, and you make sure to get juicy nuggets while staying informative.

starting with an image of the artist is always preferential, but i think in an online publication/realm, it’s better to go with the artists’ work, as it grabs more attention, and will open up a wider audience. i love the progressive rhetoric of the selfie, but better used later in the story; the caption is adorable though.

you might want to make the nutgraph a little more…objective/editorial, as “i” isn’t used anywhere else in the story BUT this is a personal aesthetic choice. your voice always comes across strong and is a character itself in most of your writing, but not in this piece.

one thing that is helpful when writing interviews is to disclose HOW/WHERE/WHEN the interview went down–which is usually done in the nutgraph, especially since this is a strict Q&A. from reading this, i can kind of tell it was done virtually, which is FINE (encouraged, b/c this is an online writing course) but it’s good ethical practice to disclose to the audience how you interacted with your subject, as that can directly inform the style/flow of the piece.

your use of links & italicized is perfect and never over-used (guess that Bustle job is training you well ;)) but the two comics in succession make is gaudy towards the bottom, and the lack of emphasis on the closing paragraph lets the photo trump the WAY more important information. a simple italicization and reformatting would fix this. but who cares, really?

great job, you’re almost done with your first year of grad school and you have a fantastic portfolio of work about a specific topic to use for jobs or continue as a thesis.
