The Purpose Of Life Is Not Happiness: It’s Usefulness
Darius Foroux

Fulfillment brings happiness, and fulfillment comes in giving. Happiness is a by-product, not the goal. Most if not all the world’s major religions espouse this. Has our hedonistic world gone so far that children aren’t taught to develop a meaningful way to give to the world? Can one not take satisfaction even in a job not liked? I’ve had a few of those, and sometimes it’s a stretch, but it’s possible (I successfully did xxx, xxx times today).

Marge Piercy has a lovely book of poetry called To Be Of Use. I recommend it. I actually recommend almost anything she has written. Some of it will be dated, but she absolutely gets the raw emotion of growing up and of war.
