Are Robots Going to Create More Jobs or Destroy More Jobs?

The debate on whether robots are going to take over human jobs completely has been a debate for a while. We see more and more improved technology as the year goes on and more simple jobs are being taken over by this technology. However the big question is, are these robots going to take over the higher level jobs too?

During the past few years, there hasn’t been a huge increase in unemployment, however, more and more things are becoming automated. For example, self check out at grocery stores and ticket machines. According to the article I found, innovations are coming at a super fast pace and and that pace is going to keep increasing throughout the next few years. (Trussell, 2018) We can’t predict exactly how fast were going to advance technologically, but we do know how fast we have in the past.

This might raise some questions for everyone:

  • Would advanced technology create more jobs than it would destroy?
  • What kinds of jobs could it create?

There isn’t a clear answer to these questions. However, in the article they state that “It is clear that the jobs lost to automation do not require the same level of skill as the jobs created by the new technology. The new jobs require more education or training. This seems to imply that workers who are replaced should be retrained for the new skills. However, we know this is impossible.” (Trussell, 2018) In other words, the new jobs that would be created would be completely different than the ones we have now and require a lot more skills. We would have to completely train new people to do these jobs, and the old ones won’t have the skills for it, therefore, they will be left unemployed.
