2. Article: The Cost of Developers, Ben Thompson Stratechery

Probably the biggest news of our industry of June was that Microsoft bought Github for 7.5B dollar. That’s 4,6x as much as Google paid for YouTube, 10x what Facebook paid for Instagram. (WhatsApp was bigger with 19B.) I think Thompson’s analysis on the deal makes a lot of sense. While very expensive, Microsoft had to do something.

4. Article (Dutch): Wat als de melkboer artificiële intelligentie inzet?, VRT

From a practical perspective, computer vision has a lot of potential to be quickly impact many industries. While many other segments of AI need lots of data to start with (for instance NLP) with computer vision you can just gather a lot of data on the fly with cheap camera’s. This allows for more SaaS(ish) solutions (with accompanying hardware) and therefore much lower implementation costs. This is a huge game changer for farmers (and for many other industries).

Talk of the town in May was the Google Duplex tech-demo. They are now releasing it for a ‘public’ beta. There are still a lot of restrictions, but it’s good to see that Google is very serious in iterating beyond the research environment.

8. Article: Personalized “deep learning” equips robots for autism therapy, MIT

This is a very interesting example of how personalized learning tools can help aid specific use-cases dramatically. I think the potential is just as big for cases

9. Article: AI at Google: our principles, Sundai Pichai

After many of its employees challenged Google to stop helping the defense department with their AI technology, Google CEO Pichai wrote a memo on the Google principles around AI. I think it’s a very good piece, and it would be great if all big companies make such a document.

10. Article: How to Build A.I. We Can Relate to, Maria Farrell

Maria goes through a couple of interesting scenarios of what can happen, for instance when we augment our brains with unlimited intelligence.
