The mobility wave and how we will surf it
The mobility sector, in particular, has always been one of the most interesting markets for me. My dad is a crazy car guy and as far as I can remember, one of the things that I have always liked has been cars. I had my first one when I was 15 years old (a brand-new Toyota Corola); it was a present from my dad, when I was given my driving permit. At home, we always have had, at least, 5 to 7 cars. The funny thing is that out of the 7 cars, we only used 2 and the other cars were parked and were used once in every 2 months, at the most. Looking back, I have owned a total of 8 cars in 34 years and I think that is a lot of cars. Now I am 34 years old and I can say that I have more buying power than I had before and now there is no way I am spending my money in buying a car. If five years ago, someone asked me if I would own a car when I was 35 I would have bet everything I had that I would for sure own, at least, 2 cars (the daily use car and a sports car for the weekends).
So, what has happened in the past 5 years that has changed my mind so drastically? Thinking about it … I have come to the conclusion that unconsciously I have been riding a new wave of mobility, where to get from point A to B, you don´t need to own a car as there are other mobility options for me to get around. I think this new wave of mobility is just starting and we are going to see a seismic shift in the transportation sector in the next 10 years, something more potent than the one in the past 50 years.
After running llollo for the past 2 years (a parking and car service for travelers), we have parked more than 60K cars, washed more than 15K cars, and serviced more than 20K cars to date. We have learned a lot from the needs and wants of our customers and unconsciously, llollo has been a School for Alejandro (COO and co-founder of llollo) and myself. What I mean by this is that llollo has been preparing us, without knowing, to be able to change the mobility sector with Bipi. Hence, we are finding, today, a new way of accessing a car for the people who live in big, dense cities — where owning a car is not a very smart choice — especially with all the mobility options.
Alejandro is a perfect example; he lives and works in the city center and he has more than 7–8 alternatives to get himself to the office every day. Alejandro doesn’t need to own a car for his everyday mobility needs. The problem comes when he wants to go out for the weekend to a nearby city, beach, play golf, etc. He doesn’t have much options other than asking a friend for a car or go to a traditional car rental company and rent a car.
This is where Bipi comes into action and why we think we are going to change the “Rent A Car” business and how people access a car.
The “Rent A Car” business has not changed in the past 50 years. To rent a car, you need to look for a nearby office (usually you need to go to the airport) make a long line, sign crazy long contracts that you don’t understand with confusing rates and insurances policies. In my opinion, this is the sector that will suffer the most in the next 5–10 years, for new mobility services are emerging. The reason behind their having a hard time is that they won’t be able to adapt as fast as they need to, because of their brick-and-mortar old business model.

The transportation sector is undergoing several, simultaneously epochal changes: autonomous driving vehicles, electric vehicles, and connected cars. Each will significantly impact the auto sector. These changes offer an opportunity to reimagine the transportation sector and shift to Transportation as a service. We are very excited for the days to come, not only because we think we have figured out the right approach for a disruptive and game changing transportation service, but also because we have an amazing team, partners, and investors to help us along the way.
