UX idea for Uber (or Lyft, or…)

Hi Jason,

I live in Indonesia. According to my experience using Uber, there are some places in which drivers and passengers need to be very discreet when using Uber. For example:

  • On a hotel entrance in Bali
    I once requested for an Uber from a hotel in Bali. Upon his arival, the Uber driver once freaked out when I publicly asked him “Is this Uber?”
    When I asked him about it, he said he was afraid other drivers would hear. Apparently other professional drivers loathed Uber drivers. He had heard stories of uber drivers getting a rough treatment from other drivers, and said he was afraid he might get one too. “Next time, just call me by my name,” he said.
  • Airport in Jakarta
    Not all taxis are allowed to pick up for passengers on Soekarno-Hatta airport in Jakarta. Only taxis with “airport stickers” are allowed to. We usually call these “airport taxis”. Normal taxis are only allowed to drop passengers. However Uber bypasses this rule, by making itself indistinguishable from normal cars.
    The other day after I disembarked from my flight, I requested for an Uber. In the process of locating my Uber driver, an airport official asked me: “Are you waiting for Uber?”
    Reflexively I said “No”. I wondered what would have happened if I said yes.

To solve the problem above, what do you think if we make the sign “obvious for drivers & passengers” yet “not-so-obvious for onlookers”?
This design consideration may be useful in places in which Uber is not generally accepted (by other drivers or officials)
