You may have heard the saying, “You eat with your eyes first.” I certainly have heard this throughout my life in the context of the importance of how food looks. Whether you select your food based on how it looks or whether taste is the only thing that matters to you, a truly stunning plate of food- and those who know how to make it- can be truly impressive.

This type of aesthetic attention is brought to new levels with Kaiseki. The aesthetics of Kaiseki are based on much more than looking pretty. Everything from the plate itself, to the direction and shapes the foods are placed in, to the arrangements and colors of textures is important to Kaiseki.

This attention to aesthetics and the change in aesthetics based on the season also impacts the non-food elements of the experience, such as the restaurant decor. Everything, from the tables and decor to your first appetizer, is thought of as art. You may have the experience while enjoying Kaiseki that it is “too beautiful” to eat, but it is meant to be eaten, just appreciated as well.
