Text Generator Plugin
After analyzing many AI Text Helpers, most of them use GPT-3 Language model (for more details, you can refer to this article The Top 5 AI Writing Assistant Tools to Help You Write Faster and Better]. Moreover, I’m not sure if they use the best model of GPT-3 “Davinci” since I always get better results on Open AI compared with AI Text Tools.
I started by using the playground section on the Open Ai website. However, taking all the text as input (which might cost you higher) and completing it makes the writing experience not very appealing. Also, I cannot generate text between paragraphs and ideas to develop them further, so I have to copy and paste them later. All these issues motivated me to start working on the “Text Generator Plugin.”
Text Generator Plugin's goal is to have at the same time the capabilities of Obsidian with all my notes and the capabilities of Open AI GPT-3, which hopefully makes my writing very fluid, fast, and powerful.
Text Generator Plugin is an affordable and powerful AI Writing Assistant. It is affordable because you directly pay from the service provider (OpenAI). And it is powerful because you have all the options of Obsidian, and you can choose the most powerful model in Open Ai, “Davinci.”.
How to use “Text Generator Plugin”
To use Text generator: you need to create an account at OpenAI to get an API Key and configure the plugin’s setting to use API Key.
Get Open AI API Key
To generate Open AI API Key. Follow the following steps:
1. Create an account on OpenAI (you will get a free 18$ trial account).
2. Click on your Account and click on View API keys
3. Generate the API key that Text Generator Plugin will use

Note: “Text Generator Plugin” is now available in community plugins.
- To install it manually, go to the releases page and download and copy over
main.js, manifest.jsonto your vault inhttp://vaultfolder/.obsidian/plugins/obsidian-textgenerator-plugin/. - After installing the “Text generator plugin” and enabling it in Obsidian, you need to provide the generated API Key to the plugin.
Text generator Plugin Options
In “Text generator Plugin,” there are three commands that I recommend you to set hotkeys for: “Generate text,” “Increase max_tokens by 10”, and “decrease max_tokens by 10”.
Generate text
Select a text and run the command; it will generate a text with a max size of (max_tokens) using GPT-3 and insert it on the current cursor position. You will see in the status bar ”Text generator (max_tokens): processing…” while generating the text.
Open AI API considers both Input and output tokens in their cost calculation Open AI pricing.
Control max_tokens
By setting hotkeys for both commands, “Increase max_tokens by 10” and “decrease max_tokens by 10,” you can easily control the size of the generated text. The actual max_tokens appear in the status bar ’Text generator (max_tokens):”.
To set a hotkey for a command, go to the “Settings” menu, then select the “Hotkeys” tab. You will see a list of all the available commands, along with the associated hotkey. Click on the desired command, then press the key combination you would like to use. Make sure that another application does not already use the key combination.
How do we interact better with GPT-3?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. You can be more efficient by interacting with it and looking at used workflows in the different AI text assistant tools.
