I guess I was always like Kick-Ass in a way: a sucked horribly at writing when I started at 16, but I never, ever fucking stopped. And, just like Kick-Ass, I didn’t properly train at first, i.e. I didn’t read enough. I just always kind of winged it and picked up on things as I went along.
I read a few books here and there, (the Bourne Identity captivated me — I’ll need to read it again soon,) but it wasn’t until a few years ago that I made very conscious decisions to start taking my writing to the next level.
Recently I’ve been suffering — I mean reading — through Moby Dick. Just kidding; it’s actually not bad so far. And that has been helping me tremendously with developing myself as an author.
I’m really not trying to sound cool, or anything like that — I personally wouldn’t consider Kick-Ass to be cool, but I’m just trying to reinforce basically what this author is trying to say: just start doing it. Even if your initial ideas suck, even if you waste countless hours writing pages that will eventually never see the light of day, just work on your book. As you start putting words on paper, things will come to you. Your characters and their desires will unravel before your very eyes, and you’ll have periods of astonishment once you actually create something beautiful.
