Introduction to Internet of Things
In this blog we’ll discuss the following:
- What is IOT?
- Why IoT now?
- How IoT can change our lifestyle
- How it works
Technology has evolved ever since, back from Pre-internet age where only telephones and SMS worked and then with help of smart networks came Internet of Content which brought Internet which gave access to email,Information and Entertainment. And,then with smart IT Platforms and services came Internet of Services which led to a e-revolution i.e e-commerce and e-productivity.Then with launch of Smart phones and applications came Internet of People ,which brought Social media such as skype, facebook, youtube etc.And then finally with Smart Data arrived Internet of Thingsbringing Automation and actuation.
About Internet of Things?
- The term Internet of Things was first used by Kevin Ashton in 1999.
- Refers to uniquely identifiable objects (things) and their virtual representations in an Internet-like structure.
Let us break down the heading further:
- Internet → The world-wise network of interconnected compute networks.
- Thing → An object not precisely identifiable.
- Internet of Things → A world-wide network of interconnected objects uniquely addressable, based on standard communication protocol.
While current Internet is a collection of rather uniform devices, IoT will exhibit much higher level of heterogeneity, as objects of totally different functionality, technology and application fields will belong to the same communication environment.
As per reports by the year 2020 around 5 million devices will be connected over internet and to each other,so what other time could be best for learning about this awesome technology??
But,how is it going to change the way we live ???
Well, with this tech coming up in the market devices would be more:
- Remotely Controllable
Sounds like a dream come true ,right?
Now,regarding how does it all work?Well its simple as that.Look below in the image ,we have a lamp which has been made intelligent using IOT and is now connected to a Local User and home router which can be accessed by a remote user using internet and all the data collected from lamp is saved over Cloud for further analysis.
Now to discuss about Components of Internet of Things, i’ll soon be writing another blog post.
Leave your Queries in comments below,i would be happy to answer them.
