The new Justice League trailer has just dropped on Youtube and has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response. With close to a 97 percent like rate, Warner Bros new superhero block buster trailer has managed to receive over five million views in just a few hours.

In addition to being-action packed and spectacularly well edited, this trailer has left fans wondering whether or not Henry Cavil’s Superman will play a significant role in this film. The last few seconds of this trailer shows Jeremy Irons’ character, Alfred Pennyworth, talking to an unannounced guest off camera, claiming that he knew this person would arrive. Current theories suggest this character is either Superman or Green Lantern. The absence of the Green Lanterns is mentioned briefly in the trailer as a cause for earth’s current defenceless state, which gives the super villain Steppenwolf the opportunity to invade. However, there may be a third option to who this mysterious character is that no one has yet considered.

During the trailer, Bruce Wayne can be seen viewing what appears to be a hologram of Superman. However, on closer inspection of this shot, we can see a much more feminine shape to this character’s legs, as well as a different design to their suit.

Is this Supergirl? Property of Warner Bros.

It would make sense for Warner Bros to include another strong female Superhero into the Justice League. It is no secret that Wonder Woman’s box office success was helped by the overall positive reception it had among female moviegoers. We also do not know the full extent and nature of the re-shoots being done by current Justice League director, Joss Whedon. Perhaps on seeing the positive reviews and financial success of Wonder Woman, Warner Bros management are trying to repeat this formula with Justice League.

Including Supergirl would also make sense from a story standpoint. From Batman’s apocalyptic vision of the future in Batman V. Superman, we can deduce that Warner Bros plan to take their DC cinematic universe down the Injustice series’ story line. In Batman’s vision, Superman appears to have taken over the world following the loss of his love interest, Louis Lane. Supergirl could be the perfect antithesis to an evil and tyrannical Superman.

Whether or not this film includes Green Lantern or Supergirl, comic book and superhero fans will need to wait until November to find out.
