The author asked, “do we want this to be an environment where racists and sexists feel safe and supported to share their views? As is so often the case, this isn’t a Yes or No question.

Do I want them to feel safe about expressing their views? Well, when it comes to any legal prohibition (government censorship) I absolutely want them to feel safe. In a free society anyone should be allowed to say what they think without fear of being jailed or otherwise punished by law (with of course the usual exceptions for incitement to violence, releasing classified information, etc.).

Do I want them to be supported? Of course not. They should be confronted and challenged; they should be ridiculed; their employers have the right to fire them and should be encouraged to do so (the First Amendment protects you from the government, not your boss).

On last note; I believe the ‘manifesto’ being circulated was anonymous. It seems that this jackass doesn’t feel either safe or supported. If he did, he would have signed it.
