I believe that healthcare is a human right. No American should ever go broke due to medical bills, but sadly almost 60% of bankruptcies are due to unaffordable healthcare. More than 250,000 people per year are forced to ask family, friends, and strangers to pay for their medical expenses. Despite the dramatic improvements of the Affordable Care Act, 27.5 million Americans were uninsured in 2018, 31% experienced insurance lapses, and 29% are underinsured. And these numbers are growing at an alarming rate.
The best solution to our healthcare challenges is to strengthen Medicare and expand it to include all Americans. As a member of Congress, I will follow Rep. Visclosky’s lead by co-sponsoring and fighting for H.R. 1384, the Medicare for All Act of 2019. Half of all Americans support Medicare for All and I intend to fight for the best version of that policy in Congress.
Unions will be highly involved in the process of transitioning our healthcare system. Under Medicare for All, every union member will have quality healthcare regardless of contract disputes, plant layoffs, or retirement status. Workers will then have a stronger negotiating position to bargain for fair wages, pensions, and time off without worrying about the healthcare benefits they and their families depend on. Medicare for All is pro-union and pro-worker.
Medicare for All will also positively change the lives of millions of Americans in many other immeasurable ways. Imagine how your life would change if you didn’t depend on a for-profit healthcare company for you and your family. Would you finally start the business you’ve always dreamt of but didn’t because you couldn’t leave your current plan? Medicare for All will bring a new era of freedom in America.
As the next member of Congress from Indiana’s 1st Congressional District, I will support any bill that expands access to healthcare. But as we are forming our goals for the future of healthcare in America, I support Medicare for All as the best way to cover every American, deal with skyrocketing healthcare costs, give more negotiating power to unions, and ensure more freedom for every American.
