Prevent Windows 11 from opening multiple instances of same application

I have recently started using a windows laptop at work which had this issue.

Steps to resolve:

1. Click on the search icon in the taskbar and search for ‘Multitasking Settings’
2. Under the Virtual desktops sub-menu setting, for ‘On the taskbar, show windows that are open’ select ‘All desktops’ .
