“Positioning beats talent”~ Mr. Pishikeni Tukura

It has been one month since i started my journey to SELF-RELIANCE at TIIDELAB. It was so overwhelming surfing the internet for coding tutorials and learning on my own became impossible. Getting to know about tiidelab became a reality and it has been so impactful and interesting.

Ok i know you must be wondering what TIIDELAB is all about , I will gist you. TIIDELab is an initiative of Techspecialist Consulting Limited, founded by Mr. Kadir Salami. TIIDELab is a technology fellowship for a period of 5 months which combines blended learning and design thinking, providing access to high-quality training for front or back end development while incorporating problem-solving and collaborative skills.

So have you ever struggled with an unsettling feeling of not being as smart as people think you are? Or happen to dwell in self-doubt and feel like a you’re not good enough every once in a while?. Studies show that 70% of adults will feel these at least once in their lives. So,you’re not alone.

I had always seen a friend post pictures of their meet-up at the last cohort which was held and I kept asking what the program was about and when the next cohort was going to take place, I was just too eager , went to their social media page and kept stalking till the the next opportunity came and i quickly grabbed it and applied. As expected, I chased this opportunity and wrote the exam and I was able to pass together with 80 other applicants qualified for the interview. In all 60 applicants were selected after carrying out successful projects and exams, and YES i was among the people selected. The day I received the mail, I was so excited that my dreams of improving myself has finally come .

Ok the gist was sweet yeah? Now let’s take a run down through my experience for the past one month.

I have spent just a month at TIIDELab so far mixed with remote and physical sessions and I have already learned so much from them. First week into tiidelab we carried out our first weekly challenge where the head of house emerged , guess what? I won and was made the first HEAD OF HOUSE of cohort 3 .

In the space of four weeks, I was taught:

  • How to write a good resume and become employable
  • Big O notation
  • Data Structures and Algorithms
  • Version Control: Git
  • Advanced HTML and CSS

For the first week, We were then introduced to Git Version Control by Grace Ejegwa and how it helps to collaborate easily with a team you are working with. This was the first time I had ever used Git to clone because I have never worked with a team before so it was cool to see how you can work on a project with a team whilst being able to track changes made.

Thereafter, we were taught to how to organize ,optimise a resume and how to make up for no experiences by building one or two big projects. TIIDELab made it clear to us that their goal is to develop self-reliant and employable people who can solve everyday challenges. Then Data Structures and Algorithm class was taken by Mr. Saheed Adepoju and the Big O notation, time and space complexity, and generally how to write readable and scalable code. Even before you begin to code you should have these fundamentals in your mind because they are the difference between a good programmer and a bad one.

In week 3–4, we then were taught Advanced HTML & CSS which was handled by Mr. Solomon Chokor for a period of two weeks, he taught us from the basic fundamentals of HTML and CSS up to the advanced level, how to build responsive websites, and how to host or deploy a website online of which we used netlify. He gave us our first task which was to build our personal portfolio site applying all the knowledge we have gained.

Through my one month at TIIDELab, we have had daily CCAT appraisal which helped increase our reasoning, critical thinking abilities and help improve us, and Fridays was our weekly physical meetup where we are always privileged to hear from different guest speakers such as Mr Kadir Salami(CEO, Tech Specialist Consulting , Nigeria) and Mr. Pishikemi Tukura (Quality Assurance Officer, Tech Specialist Consulting). We also have team-bonding strategies and have been trained to improve skills such as Problem Framing and Solving, Communication Skills, and Listening Skills by our coordinator, Mr. Shamsudeen Aderoju and Mr. Pishikeni Tukura. They have taught me that being a great software developer is not just about being able to write code but also about being able to identify problems, create solutions, and communicate them effectively.

There has been a substantial growth in so many aspect from the day I became a fellow to the present day. I am always grateful i applied and a part of this great family.I appreciate the Founder (Mr. Kadir Salami), the management staff, the sponsors of this great program (ITF, NECA), and the entire TIIDELab team.

Thanks so much! and Watch out for the second edition.✌🏻🤗 I would love to connect with you, Below are my social media links
