Short Fiction Rec: The Long Hard Road by Joseph Chibike

Check out this melancholy not-quite love story about how life in an ungrateful city brings two people together. There is an almost supernatural quality underlying the story that reflects the way I’ve experienced city life. It’s all so much bigger than you are, and it’s so isolating. Small things become magnified, and what’s great seems insignificant and commonplace. The dissonance can turn everything upside down inside you. Insomnia is a frequent side effect, one that Chibike explores. The language evokes loneliness beautifully, and I think any city-dweller will find some element of a lived truth in the story.
