Clutter Free Lifestyle
One of my philosophies in life is to be as clutter free as possible. To only own exactly what you use. I hate people that hoard shit. It frustrates me because not only are they inhibiting the amount of space they can actually use in their house but the goods they don’t use could actually be used by someone else who actually needs them.
That’s why since I arrived back from America I’ve been on a bit of a selling spree. I needed the money anyway but I wanted to abide by my ethos. Talk the talk and walk the walk. I’ve sold 4 items so far that being a midi keyboard, a normal full size keyboard, a guitar and amp set and sunglasses. I also helped to get rid of an old pile of bricks that were rotting away in our backyard. We put these up for free and the demand was incredible. I got like 10 email enquiries about them.
I’ve been using Gumtree to get rid of all this stuff and I’ve been quite happy with the UX. The iOS app works well and it’s super simple to post items to sell. It literally takes about 5 minutes once you have photos. The community on Gumtree I know can be a bit dodgy but I’ve had only good experiences with people thus far. That is, apart from them showing up late to pick up the items. I’ve made about $250 total and whilst it’s not a whole lot of money it’s just good to not have these items in my life anymore. I wasn’t using them so why have them.

I’ve also been actively working on what the fuck I’m doing as a career this week. Big task I know. I’ve continued to apply for work as a copywriter, research analyst or social media manager and haven’t been successful in getting an interview since the first week I arrived home. This sucks but it has provided me with time to work on my personal brand. To write and design as many things as possible. I’ve also picked up the pace and my YouTube channel and have been dropping a couple of videos a week.
I’m thinking of just applying for a more hospitality based job for the short term (anything but BWS again) and waiting until the UX intensive course at General Assembly starts in November. This is the course I want to do if you’re interested in checking it out.
I emailed a couple of UX guys earlier in the week as I wanted to pick their brains on what I should do to get into the field. I was also interested in whether they knew anything about General Assembly. Essentially, they said the General Assembly course would be great but that I need to keep working on projects. I need to keep making things and making things is what I have been and will continue to do. I guess I could really focus in on the UX side of things. I could be reading more UX books and doing more prototyping. I’m also thinking of doing some redesigns of certain products but using a design thinking methodology to guide everything that I do. I’d like to present this both on Medium and YouTube. Medium being more in depth type of stuff and YouTube being quick thoughts/reaction videos.
My YouTube channel has actually grown this week which is weird. I have about 300 views for my iPad review video now. I guess it’s just that if you review any Apple products you’re bound to get hits.
Unfortunately I’ve been a bit sick this week. I had a shitty cold that gave me a cough, snotty nose and slight headache but everything is okay now. I did a lot of running training the weekend before this one (30km in 3 days) so that may have contributed. However, I also hung out with some of my mates that weekend who were a bit crook. I think there is just sickness everywhere in Melbourne right now as it’s that time of year.
